In the State of Wisconsin a Plumbing License is required for any person that wants to perform work as a plumbers in Wisconsin. Journeyman and Master Plumbing Licenses are issued by the Safety and Buildings Division of The Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services after passing the State Plumbing Exam.

Requirements for a Wisconsin Plumbers License.

No Business or Individual is allowed to install plumbing unless that business or individual is the holder of a license issued by the Wisconsin Department of Safety  and Buildings as a:

licensed master plumber, licensed master plumber (restricted), licensed journeyman plumber, licensed journeyman plumber (restricted), registered plumbing apprentice, registered plumbing learner (restricted), registered utility contractor or registered pipe layer.

Journeyman Plumber License Requirements

  • Applicants will need Preapproval for the state in order to take the exams.
  • Applicants for a journeyman license exam must have completed a plumbing apprenticeship program recognized by the Department.
  • In order to obtain the credential the applicant must get a score of at least 70% on the examination.

The application and exam fee for a Wisconsin Journeyman plumber license is $30.00, and consists of $10.00 application fee and $20.00 for the examination fee. When you pass the exam you will be asked to pay a $180 license fee which will be prorated because the license expires on a specific date. The license, which will be issued after the exam is passed and the prorated license fee paid and will be valid for 4 years starting from March 31st.

Master Plumbers License Requirements

  • Applicants will need Preapproval for the state in order to take the exams.
  • As a prerequisite to taking the Department of Commerce exam, the applicant shall provide proof of:
    1.) at least 1,000 hours per year for at least 3 consecutive years as a licensed journeyman plumber; or
    2.) graduation from an accredited engineering university or college with a degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, or other approved curriculum related to plumbing.
  • In order to obtain the credential the applicant must get a score of at least 70% on the examination.

The application and exam fee for a Wisconsin Master plumber license is $50.00, and consists of $20.00 application fee and $30.00 for the examination fee. When you pass the exam you will be asked to pay a $500 license fee which will be prorated because the license expires on a specific date. The license, which will be issued after the exam is passed and the prorated license fee paid and will be valid for 4 years starting from March 31st.
