In the state of New York plumbers must register with the Secretary of State. All other NY licensing is regulated at the local level. Local government entities regulate the trade of plumbing as outlined in NYS General City Law, Article 4. To obtain a certificate of competency to conduct the trade or business of plumbing, one must pass the New York plumbers exam.

New York City Journeyman & Master Plumbers License

In NYC anyone can perform plumbing work as a journeyman plumber, however a master plumber is licensed by the state of New York to perform any and all plumbing jobs.

To become a master plumber in New York you have to assert a certain level of experience before you can apply for the master plumber's license. Once you meet the requirements, you must pass the exam given by the NY licensing authority.

  • All applicants need to be at least 18 years old to apply for a plumbing license.
  • Able to read, write, and understand the English language.
  • All applicants need to be of good moral character.
  • Work for seven years performing plumbing installations. (5 years with a bachelor in engineering)

Applying to Get a Master Plumber License

You can get the application form online, from the New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS).

You will need to complete and submit the license application, along with the exam fee, after which you will be able to take the exams

You will need to pass two exams, the written exam is a multiple-choice test that will test your knowledge of the New York's plumbing code. After the written exam you will need to pass the practical exam. This is a hands-on test of your ability to handle plumbing application and installations. After approximately five weeks you will be notified of the results.
