In the State of Maine a plumbing license is required for any person, corporation, partnership or other entity that is engaged in plumbing or performing plumbing installations. In order to get an application for a Maine Plumber license, you should contact the ME Department of Professional & Financial Regulations - Plumbers’ Examining Board.
Requirements for a Maine Plumbing License
The statutory requirements for licensing as a trainee plumber (apprentice plumber), journeyman-in-training, journeyman plumber and master plumber are set by the Maine Office of Licensing & Registration Plumbers examining board.

Trainee Plumbers License
- All Applicants for a trainee plumber license need to be at least 16 years of age.
- The Applications must be made on application forms provided by the plumbers examining board.
- Applications must be accompanied by the application and license fee.
Journeyman in Training License
- Applicants for a journeyman-in-training license must pass the journeyman plumber exam.
- The Applications must be made on application forms provided by the Maine plumbers examining board.
- Applications must be accompanied by the application fee and license fee.
Journeyman Plumber License
- Applicants for a journeyman plumber license must pass the journeyman plumber exam.
- The Applications must be made on the application form provided by the state board of plumbers examining.
- Applications must be accompanied by the required application fee and license fee.
Applicants for a journeyman plumbers license require at least 2 years (4,000 hours) of experience in the field of plumbing installations as a licensed trainee plumber, or at least 2,000 hours of experience in the field of plumbing installations as a journeyman-in-training.
Master Plumber License
- Applicants for a master plumber license must pass the master plumber examination.
- All Applications must be made on the application form provided by the state plumbers examining board.
- The application must be accompanied by the license en registration fee.
Applicants for a Master plumbers license require a minimum of 1 year (2,000 hours) of work experience on plumbing and installations as a licensed journeyman plumber or a minimum of at least 4 years (8,000 hours) of experience working on plumbing installations as a licensed trainee plumber.
Apply to get an ME Plumbing License
The application fee for licensing is $25. The license fee for a master plumber, journeyman plumber or corporation is $200. The licensing fee for journeyman-in-training and trainee plumbers is $100.
