Hidden Hazards of Air Conditioning

There are hidden hazards associated with air conditioners and air conditioning. While air conditioners come along with added comfort and protection from the summer heat and its life-threatening conditions like heat stroke, they too come with their own hidden hazards which make them undesirable by most people. When it is too hot the body loses its ability to release heat and sweating may also stop, causing the body’s temperatures to soar high. This is where going into an air-conditioned room comes in handy.

For people suffering from diabetes, heart disease and those on some prescribed medication cannot put their lives at risk by exposing themselves to too much heat. However air conditioning also poses its own threats which cannot be ignored.

Allergies and Asthma reactions

People suffering from allergies or asthma cannot be exposed to air conditioners as this becomes dangerous for them. As the air conditioning units cool the air, they also filter pollen, mold spores and dust amongst other things and these can easily trigger an allergic reaction or asthmatic reactions for those susceptible to such.

If not well-maintained

Air conditioners that are not well-maintained can cause various problems which they are ironically designed to prevent. Dirty air filters can harbor pollen, fungi and bacteria amongst other things- allowing micro-organisms into the room. This can trigger eye irritation, nose irritation and sinuses, including flu. Only proper maintenance can prevent these.

Misinformation

Most problems are caused by misinformation or wrong information. One must be fully informed about possible problems with air conditioning in order to deal with them swiftly. Possible signs can help one identify the problem with the air conditioning in one’s home.

Six of these are hidden hazards that can tell one that there is a problem with their home air quality problem:

  1. Unusual and noticeable odors inside the home. These can manifest as stale or stuffy air inside the house. This can also manifest as noticeable lack of air movement inside one’s house or room. This is a hazard and must not be taken lightly.
  2. Dirty or faulty central heating or dirty or faulty air conditioning equipment. This too must not be ignored. Sometimes, one can spot mold in the house or room.
  3. Excessive humidity or condensation taking place inside one’s house or room. Also damaged pipes or chimney can be a contributor to this.
  4. Tightly construed or remodeled homes
  5. Health reactions when inside the house or room especially after remodeling or installing new furniture or after moving into a new home.
  6. Feeling a lot healthier when outside the home than when inside the home. This is also a major pointer of hazards of air conditioning.
