In the State of Maryland a Plumbing License is required in order to provide or assist in providing plumbing and gas services in Maryland. The MD State Board of Plumbing issues separate licenses for journeyman plumbers / gas fitters and Master Plumbers / Gas Fitters.

Requirements for a Maryland Plumber / Gas Fitter License

In order to get a Maryland plumbing license application for a Maryland plumber license, you should contact the Maryland Board of Plumbing or visit the website of the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation and download a copy there.

The board of plumbing is responsible for the maryland plumbing license test and handles the maryland plumbing license renewals. Before you can apply for a Maryland plumbing license you will need to meet the requirements set by the MD board of plumbing.

Journeyman Plumber License Requirements

  • Applicants need to have held an apprentice license for at least 4 years.
  • Applicants must have completed 7,500 hours of training under the control and direction of a licensed master plumber.
  • Applicants must have completed 32 hours of training in backflow prevention device testing.
  • Applicants must pass a written plumbing exam.

Master Plumber License Requirements

  • Applicants must have held a journey license for at least two years.
  • Applicants must have completed 3,700 hours of training under the direction and control of a licensed master plumber.
  • Applicants must pass a written plumbing exam.

Working with a Maryland Plumber License

The Maryland Journeyman Plumbing license covers unlimited plumbing work including sanitary drainage, water supply, storm drainage, and natural gas piping but only under the supervision of a Master Plumber.
