In the state of Massachusetts a state license is required for plumbers, construction supervisors and all electrical, landscape architecture, and home improvement related trades. Mass plumber licenses can be obtained from the MA Division of Professional Licensure.

State of Massachusetts Plumbing License Requirements

Any person that is looking to perform plumbing work in the state of mass. will need to aquire a Massachusetts journeyman plumber license or master plumber license.

Massachusetts Journeyman Plumbers License

Every applicant for a journeyman plumber’s license will need to have worked for no less than three years inside Massachusetts as an apprentice plumber.

Massachusetts Master Plumber License

Applicants for a master plumber’s license need to have had a Massachusetts journeyman plumber’s license for no less than 1 year. Applicants will need to have completed no less than 100 hours of advanced plumbing theory at a state, municipal or private school accredited by the Massachusetts State Department of Education and approved by the Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gasfitters, before being eligible for examination.

Work that can be Done Under this Plumbing License

Journeyman Plumber - A person who himself does any work in plumbing and gas fitting, subject to inspection under any law, rule, or regulation.

Master Plumber - A plumber having a regular place of business and who, by himself or journeyman plumbers in his employ, performs plumbing and gas fitting work, subject to inspection and in compliance with any law, rule, or regulation pertaining to same.
